Downtown Streets Team (DST) is looking for a passionate and outgoing Chief Development Officer (CDO) to help us end homelessness through the dignity of work and the power of community.
ABOUT US: Downtown Streets Team strives to end homelessness through the dignity of work and the power of community.
Started in 2005, we run a volunteer program and a work program that engage those experiencing homelessness to clean city streets, parks, and highways.
In return, we provide critical job and life skills to get them to self-sufficiency.
We are in 20 cities throughout Northern California, and we have been rated as one of the top evidence-based best practices by the League of California Cities and the California State Association of Counties.
We have a budget of $17M and almost 300 employees.
SUMMARY OF THE POSITION: The Chief Development Officer (CDO) is a fundraising professional who is responsible for developing and leading DST’s fundraising, marketing, and communications strategies to deliver significant growth in our supporter base and contributed income generation.
The CDO will lead a growing team responsible for $3M in private revenue, $1.
5M of which is contributed by individual donors.
The CDO should be an experienced, entrepreneurial, articulate and highly motivated professional with at least ten years of experience in the non-profit fund development field.
The CDO will foster relationships with key funding organizations and influential/philanthropic individuals to create enduring partnerships.
He/she will be held accountable for cycling those relationships inside a moves management system toward new sponsorships, grants and individual philanthropic gifts.
Schedule and Work Environment: Downtown Streets Team offers a flexible work environment, as each unique position allows.
This is a full-time role with a flexible Monday through Friday daytime schedule.
Evening and weekend work will be required to meet with donors outside of working hours, to represent the agency at events, and to participate in agency events and board/volunteer committee meetings.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: General Fundraising (30%): Grow all of DST’s contributed revenue streams including major gifts (individuals, corporate, foundations); mid-level moves management (moving smaller gifts to larger ones); events (Fallfest), and broad-based support (direct mail, email campaigns, online giving, and social media for our spring, summer, and year-end appeals).
Develop direct relationships with philanthropic and corporate partners, growing the breath and scale of possible offerings.
Produce and edit materials, such as briefings, collateral, solicitation letters, articles, newsletters, and reports.
Work with the Board of Directors to maximize their personal and professional fundraising contributions.
Augment current Raiser’s Edge / Salesforce fundraising system capabilities, and develop and maintain a prospect profile, strategy and tracking/priority system.
Support the CEO in any development and fundraising activities.
Identify grant opportunities and coordinate with other members of the senior operations team to draft the grant application.
Oversee our grant writer and grant applications.
Major Gifts (25%): Design and execute a major gifts fundraising strategy.
Have an outward facing role to build, strengthen and maintain good relationships with funders and liaise with key partners and major donors.
Lead regular prospect strategy sessions to drive gift closures at five and six-figure levels, ensuring that philanthropic potential is optimized through the development of appropriate cultivation and solicitation strategies.
Build and manage a portfolio, approximately 100-125 households with gifts of $1,000 or more for the purpose of deepening engagement among existing major donors, increasing giving among those donors, increasing the number of major donors to DST, and growing annual operating and campaign specific revenue.
Cultivate new donors.
Draft and edit operational and campaign donor correspondences, proposals, reports, acknowledgements, and solicitations.
Identify and secure planned giving prospects.
Leadership and Management (20%): Devise and execute a fundraising strategy and plan.
Inspire, lead, and develop all four members of the fundraising and communication team.
Oversee the mentorship, professional development, onboarding, ongoing training and education of development/communications staff, and provide formal feedback to staff in bi-annual performance reviews.
Plan, direct, monitor and evaluate all fundraising targets for the fundraising team.
Ensure that each stream of income defined in the fundraising strategy has a detailed work plan and the associated staff are clear about their required work plans, targets and KPIs.
As a member of the senior operations team, contribute to all leadership, strategic and operational matters.
Build relationships with Team Members, staff, key volunteers, community members, agency supporters, and board members.
Oversee the annual development budget and manage the department to be fiscally responsible with available funds.
Communications and Marketing (20%): Develop and lead DST’s marketing activity across all channels and platforms with clear fundraising objectives and measurable impact.
Develop DST into a thought leader of best-practice interventions for the unhoused.
Use enhanced data management techniques and analytics to focus marketing efforts on highest impact and return on investment.
Measure and evaluate our social media and online activities to maximize effectiveness.
General Development Responsibilities (5%): Adhere to the Code of Conduct and Core Values of DST.
Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The following qualifications are requirements for the position: At least ten years' experience in fundraising with a proven track record of securing major gifts from individuals and advancing gift cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies.
Proven track record of fundraising at a senior level with experience setting and meeting ambitious income targets.
Knowledge of planned giving (bequests, trusts, gift annuities, etc.
), major and annual gift fundraising principles and best practices, and demonstrated personal success in closing major gifts.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills, with demonstrated ability to create clear and persuasive communications in both traditional and digital formats.
High degree of emotional intelligence.
Goal and results-driven with the ability to meet deadlines in a fast paced service environment.
Experience demonstrating discretion and holding sensitive and personal information about donors in confidence Adept at Microsoft Office products, and experience with Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge, or similar CRM/Development databases Valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.
Will need to drive frequently at times.
The following qualifications are highly desirable: Familiar with Raiser’s Edge and/or Salesforce.
Comfort with picking up the phone to place cold calls, able to secure face-to-face meetings with donor prospects.
Ability to take initiative and anticipate the needs of donors, stakeholders, and colleagues.
Able to overcome obstacles, working independently and as part of a team.
Understanding of industry standards regarding donor solicitation, confidentiality, gift crediting, stewardship, and financial principles that shape the work of fundraising professionals.
Other requirements: Must provide evidence of a recent test for tuberculosis.
