POSITION SUMMARY The Director of Development – CIA California (DOD-CA) is responsible for securing support from individuals and organizations for the Culinary Institute of America’s (CIA’s) mission in California.
They are responsible for meeting or exceeding annual fundraising targets and securing major gifts for scholarships and facilities by raising operating and capital funds through major gift solicitation, volunteer leadership development and engagement, and support from institutional funders.
The Director is also responsible for ensuring the financial success of The CIA at Copia’s public programs and special events through sponsorship from consumer-focused businesses.
In addition to these primary areas, the DOD-CA will support the college’s Senior Advancement Officer for Corporate Relations in stewarding the west coast engagement of national corporate donors and coordinate with the college’s Copia-based Director – Corporate Relations, who oversees foodservice sponsorships.
Working with these colleagues, the DOD-CA will have the opportunity to network within the companies the college already works with in a foodservice marketing capacity, to access consumer marketing opportunities.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES Focus efforts on the engagement of high-net-worth individuals, organizations, corporation and/or foundations (within and beyond the Napa Valley) interested in: health and sustainability; access to education; community-building; and food, wine, and hospitality.
Lead the development of a rich and robust consumer programs sponsorship program.
Primacy is placed on securing support from new donors/partners.
Partner with the CIA team at Copia to leverage opportunities to work with current supporters to translate their engagement to Copia’s desirable consumer audience.
Build a robust pipeline of philanthropic donors, including identifying new prospects while ensuring current donors are as engaged as possible.
Conduct a minimum of 10-15 unique visits, conversations, or introductions per month in addition to engaging prospects at special events.
Develop relationships, maintain contact, and ready-for-ask foundations and local businesses in support of the college’s philanthropic mission.
Support Director – Special Events and Sponsorship Fulfillment in the execution of The Thomas Keller Golf Classic as the primary on-the-ground owner, and focus on the growth of the event from leaning into individual engagement opportunities (beyond the event’s primarily foodservice oriented supporters).
Plan, design, and evaluate strategies for the engagement and stewardship of the CIA’s fundraising programs in California.
Coordinate with the Alumni Office to support west coast engagement of CIA graduates.
Be a local set of “eyes and ears,” able to articulate and identify opportunities for support national in nature that will further the objectives of the DOD-CA’s colleagues in Hyde Park and Texas.
Liaise with the Advancement Office in the areas of development operations, donor and gift acknowledgment, record-keeping, and reporting requirements.
Expand the pool of individual prospective donors, with a particular focus on developing the college’s existing “Society of Fellows” program, as well as through other annual giving efforts, and through the conversion of public program participants and customers.

The DOD-CA is a member of the CIA’s Advancement Division, a dedicated, goal-oriented team that shares the purpose to support the education of the next generation of food and hospitality leaders.
As part of the Division’s highly collaborative “Senior Team,” the DOD-CA will help to shape Advancement strategy and have access to a suite of professionals who will support the DOD-CA in the areas of communications and proposal development, event execution, and reporting and stewardship.
Important relationships: Senior Advancement Officer – Corporate Relations (Hyde Park/remote), for coordination and collaboration on consumer corporate opportunities.
Senior Advancement Officer – Individual Giving (Hyde Park), for engagement of The Society of Fellows and oversight of the college’s Scholarship and Alumni programs.
Director, Special Events (Hyde Park) pertaining to strategy and execution of The Thomas Keller Golf Classic.
Director, Corporate Relations (Copia) for coordination on Copia-based foodservice conferences and programs.
The DOD-CA also sits on The CIA at Copia’s management team chaired by the CIA’s Managing Director – California.
This team develops, guides, and manages programs at the campus.
The DOD-CA will work across departments at Copia including Special Events, Food & Beverage, Public Programs, and Marketing & Communications.
The DOD-CA will also build collaborative relationships with operational and academic leadership at the Greystone campus.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Education: Bachelor’s degree.
Experience: Three (3) years of experience in fundraising, sales, development, management or events or related experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of the northern California business and philanthropic community, some experience in food/wine/hospitality.
Experience in a museum environment with a robust suite of public programs is desirable.
