The Opportunity This position works out of our Alameda, CA location in the Public Affairs Division.
We are currently seeking a Senior Manager, Public Affairs (Public Relations) to support our U.
S.
diabetes care business, based in Alameda, California, helping to lead media relations and communications activities for the world-leading FreeStyle Libre portfolio of continuous glucose monitoring systems.
This position will report to the Director of Public Affairs for Abbott’s U.
S.
diabetes care business.
What You’ll Work On The successful candidate has the ability to manage multiple high-profile projects across a matrixed organization that includes supporting the needs of the business and corporate endeavors.
They should be passionate about consumer technology and its impact on human health.
We’re seeking a candidate who is well-versed in working with senior leadership and is a strong storyteller in consumer, tech, and health, and has a proven track record of obtaining top-tier media placements.
They should have developed and managed strategic, integrated PR campaigns, particularly ones focused on reputation and leadership.
The Senior Manager will be expected to be the day-to-day contact with multiple agencies that support PR programs, social media influencers and patient ambassadors.
The Senior Manager liaises closely with Abbott’s Corporate External Affairs team to ensure consistency with the corporation’s overarching media strategy and messages.
Job Responsibilities Work directly with the Director, Public Affairs for U.
S.
Diabetes Care and other senior staff in the business and corporation to develop communications and media strategies.
Work extensively with national U.
S.
media, serving as spokesperson for brand and business as needed.
Develops newsworthy, relevant stories to pitch to top-tier, business, and regional media in the U.
S.
Interface with various division and corporate teams, including government affairs, investor relations, legal, finance, marketing, regulatory, medical, clinical, and senior management.
Enhance the visibility of the business and the company through strategic communications and competitive positioning while also protecting the company’s reputation.
Develop strategy and programming by overseeing the execution for PR and social media programming for products/brand/company.
Oversee development of messages, press materials and other communications tools.
Effectively manage PR agencies.
Lead patient ambassador program in the U.
S.
, overseeing an external agency and developing patient stories that can be used internally and externally.
Liaise with Abbott’s Corporate Content teams on patient stories for Abbott’s online and social channels.
Create multimedia, content and social and digital strategies to complement key PR campaigns.
Bring to the table an understanding of today's communications environment amongst earned, owned, social and paid media.
Partner with marketing colleagues to ensure that U.
S.
influencer and social media programs are successful and effective while protecting Abbott’s reputation.
Set metrics to measure effectiveness of public relations and communications efforts.
Coach senior divisional executives and third-party spokespeople on the delivery of messages.
Identify and anticipate issues and work with appropriate functions to counsel management on reputation/business impact and influence business decision-making process.
Finance/Administrative: Assist the director in managing and shaping department policies and procedures.
Ensure proper adherence to all financial, administrative, and regulatory policies.
Ensure programs fall within budget parameters.
Required Qualifications A bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, communications, business, marketing or related field is required.
8+ years of experience in public relations, media relations and/or communications, with a deep understanding of how to use external communications to enhance reputation.
Strong contacts and working relationships with a variety of top-tier media.
Proven ability in placing media stories and managing relationships with U.
S.
top-tier technology, lifestyle, consumer and business media.
Consistent track record of excellent writing, communications and project management skills.
Preferred Qualifications Experience in consumer, healthcare, and/or technology communications preferred.
Strong experience in developing compelling content for product communications and developing key positioning, messaging, toolkits.
Experience in working in a regulated environment.
Able to achieve results while dealing with ambiguity, discretion, and a rapid pace of change.
Experience working with and counseling senior management.
Exhibits strong judgement and executive presence.
Proven experience in leading digital, social media influencer, and patient ambassadors projects to build brands.
Understanding of how to work within a matrixed organization and get things done.
Ability to communicate persuasively and influence others.
