The Vice Chancellor - Business Development, Innovation and Partnerships at UCSF is charged with accelerating the commercialization of innovative therapies and technologies that hold the promise of advancing health worldwide.
With experts in technology transfer, business alliances and ventures, and equity management, the unit negotiates licensing and equity partnerships and identifies opportunities for business development that benefit faculty investigators as well as the institution.
With carefully crafted relationships and a service-oriented approach, IV works to establish UCSF as the partner of choice for industries working on the leading edge of biomedicine.
The unit also provides financial support, access to subject matter experts, and educational programs in entrepreneurship to faculty and students interested in working with industry.
The leader will have ownership of and responsibility for this vision.
The successful candidate will provide vision, direction, leadership, and oversight over strategic and business development, and operational and management, aspects of Innovation Ventures.
S/he will have in-depth knowledge and experience with business development, entrepreneurialism, and private industry, in life sciences/biotech and technology in the Silicon Valley/Bay Area and beyond, and existing strong relationships in these sectors.
Knowledge of and familiarity with the academic clinical and research enterprise is desirable.
A strong leadership presence and visionary outlook that enables bringing together multiple and diverse stakeholders, and interest and ability to develop mutually beneficial structures and agreements is necessary.
The role requires ability and experience in managing matrixed teams within a a complex, fast- evolving organizational environment.
This role reports directly to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost (EVCP).
The EVCP works with the Chancellor to set campus -wide priorities, strategy, and direction.
The EVCP is responsible for the success of the research and academic mission academics and the integrity of academic support infrastructure.

Required Qualifications MBA, MD, PhD or equivalent terminal degree is required.
Entrepreneurial company experience (+500MM) Entrepreneurial experience in a leveraged organization generating $500 million in revenue or more.
Having worked in a venture capital or private equity portfolio company and ideally led a company to a liquidity event is a strong plus.
Demonstrated expertise and knowledge of multiple sectors and have existing relationships in the areas of life sciences, technology, digital health, and medical devices.
Multi-sector and geographic experience Demonstrate expertise and knowledge of multiple sectors, and be able to attract talent from and develop relationships in the areas of life sciences, technology, digital health and medical devices in the Silicon Valley, San Francisco Bay Area, and other national biopharma and technology ‘hubs’.
Team Leadership of 10+ Experience having built, inspired, and led direct and indirect teams of skilled, diverse and sometimes divergent experts; experience with senior level management of complex teams, strategic internal and external communication, conflict management, and high-level financial management.
Experience in an academic research setting Prior work in, support of or some meaningful exposure to the academic research environment through either faculty or administrative appointment, board service or other means.
Experience with technology management, licensing and patent development.
