Summary
The Senior Manager of Operations is responsible for leading and supervising the work of Metro’s Operation Managers, union steady workers, and casual laborers engaged in loading or discharging ship’s cargoes in a safe and efficient manner.
This position is responsible for maintaining client relationships and optimizing the productivity of the labor.
The Senior Manager of Operations acts as a liaison and communicates relevant issues to their team, customers, and Metro leadership.
Supervises staff and issues discipline and grievances through the Foreman, as necessary; implements safety policies and procedures, including root cause analysis and investigations.
The Senior Manager of Operations ensures customer requirements are met, including requests for work methods and procedures; ensures staff operates in a productive, safe and healthy manner ensuring that cargo is loaded on time, in accordance with instructions and industry standards, and in compliance with federal, state and local safety rules and regulations; participates in pre-shift meetings and helps to formulate the implementation of policies and processes.
Requirements Effectively supervise and direct the work activities of labor, foremen and other personnel; ensure performance expectations and customer needs are met.
Provide exceptional customer service for all customers.
Oversee operation set-up.
Responsible for pre/post-operation equipment check.
Order labor with possible changes to ensure proper daily staffing.
Plan operations with Foreman and Clerks.
Input/check labor payrolls to ensure accuracy.
Coordinate with Ship Agent/Metro Shore/Terminal Management, if necessary.
Build relationships with clients.
Build positive relations with the union.
Address client needs quickly and appropriately.
Keep supervisor apprised of noteworthy details of the operations.
Counsel, discipline and terminate Foremen and Supervisory Clerks when necessary.
Participate in the interviewing and selection process for steady labor Oversee ILWU Local 75 security team and liaise with FSO/Terminal Manager to ensure all aspects of the Facility Security Plan are enforced.
Review and approve payrolls for unionized labor.
Order parts as needed for equipment.
Supervise staff at the port, including roles such as: longshoremen, mechanics and checkers.
Conduct and/or participate in safety meetings.
Able to work weekends and holidays based on operations schedule.
Assist with the needs of the terminal and or ship agent.
Ensure office supplies are kept stocked.
Address or contact the proper help to troubleshoot minor IT problems.
Update the Vessel Calendar.
Ensures the payment of terminal and stevedoring related bills monthly.
Travel may be required to other ports in the Gulf or West Coast.
Supervisory Responsibilities In accordance with applicable policies/procedures and Federal/State laws, may perform the following supervisory responsibilities: Interview, hire, orient, coach and develop employees; plan, assign, and direct work; appraise, manage and reward performance; address complaints and resolve problems.
Direct Reports Operations Managers Requirements: Knowledge/ Experience 7-10 years working experience in maritime industry working directly with operations preferred.
High School diploma or equivalent Bachelor’s Degree in an area of study, such as Communications or Business, preferred Prior experience in inventory control, freight and shipping & computer operating systems.
Experience with maritime cargo or cruise industry preferred.
Strong knowledge of ILWU/ PMA contracts & safety code.
Union personnel supervision experience preferred.
