Sonoma Raceway is the heart of Speedway Motorsports’ nationwide network of entertainment venues.
The company maintains a consistent focus on four core principles: Take care of teammates Be known for remarkable events Positively impact the community Profitably improve ABOUT THE ROLE: The Sonoma Raceway Communications Internship is a paid internship position in the Communications department that will support public relations efforts and major event activities.
The Communications team is responsible for promoting the raceway in the local and larger communities by developing and maintaining relationships with print, radio and television media, PR representatives from series and teams, as well as businesses and members of the local communities of Sonoma County and the surrounding area.
Activities include interacting with members of the media/press and PR reps, building and updating media contacts database, writing press releases and maintaining a news calendar, assisting with scheduling team/driver availabilities and representing Sonoma Raceway at supporting events.
During major events, the Communications team is responsible for running the media center, writing press releases and web articles, making sure that members of the press have the information they need in an environment where they can work effectively.
Additionally, the Communications team is responsible for organizing and executing press conferences, media availabilities and press events on- or off-site.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintain and update event playbook with timing, information, tracking progress Maintain and update database of news outlets and journalists Assist in pitching stories and availabilities to media to drive coverage Document and prepare a detailed report of media coverage of each event using our news reporting service, including recaps of videos and news generated Team members will submit a final review which will include an overview of each event, the success of each event, and suggested changes to make the program more successful and provide ideas, contacts, suggestions on program improvement Become an educated brand ambassador by developing and maintaining knowledge of Sonoma Raceway and various key racing personalities Assist in Media Center management: press conferences, media center setup, A/V, information management Other duties as assigned MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Currently enrolled or recently graduated from a four-year College/University Possess strong communication, interpersonal, written, and verbal skills Passionate about sports, motorsports and/or sports marketing High degree of integrity and confidentiality Creative thinking to generate interest of media outlets in Sonoma Raceway events Possess strong communication, interpersonal, written, and verbal skills Innovative and self-motivated with perseverance to get the task done Promotional experience is a plus Local market knowledge is a plus Superior verbal/written communications skills Excellent organizational skills and a strong attention to detail Ability to work independently as well as in team environments Position requires ability to work nights and weekends Position may require occasional travel through Speedway Motorsports workshare program to other facilities to support other events WORK HOURS: Must be available to work weekends and longer hours during events Must have a flexible schedule Must be willing to work unusual hours PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
The team member frequently is required to stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms.
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
Must be able to see and hear in the normal range with or without correction and communicate verbally and in written form with great facility and must be able to be understood.
Must have the stamina to work long hours and must be willing to work an irregular schedule, which may include weekends or evenings.
Work outdoors requires physical strength and stamina to endure extreme heat, cold, rain and other conditions.
PAY RATE: $15.
