Position Summary We are seeking an experienced Data Manager who wants to employ both their technical and soft skills in data, along with project and stakeholder management to collaborate across the organization to help KIPP maximize public funding while giving valuable time back to school teams.
Core to the role is leading our accountability and compliance reporting to State, Federal, and Local agencies through a mix of python automated tooling (pandas and selenium libraries) and centralized data quality systems, leveraging our data warehouse and Galaxy, our data platform.
Additionally, this role is responsible for executing on our data quality strategy, driving the delivery of reliable data for strategic decision-making, organizational improvement, and accurate, timely reporting.
The Data Manager will manage several projects and ongoing workflows at the intersection of public funding, data, operations, human resources and special education.
Ideal candidates possess a keen attention to detail, an ability to manage complex projects, ability to collaborate with both business and technical resources across the organization, a willingness to ask questions, dig for answers, and thirst for constant improvement.
This role sits on our Data & Evaluation Team and reports to our Associate Director of Data.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities: External Reporting - State, Federal and Authorizer (~60%) Manage and lead the annual process for the California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System (CALPADS), which houses student demographic, staffing, course and programmatic data for 17 KIPP schools and growing, including data submissions, data reconciliation, data quality, user access, training and resource support.
Project & Stakeholder Management: Project manage on time submissions to state and federal agencies, collecting required data and information from multiple teams and stakeholders to meet compliance requirements.
Build, maintain and leverage strong collaborative relationships with Human Resources, Special Education, Operations and other state agencies to meet project and compliance goals.
Data Automation & Management: Enhance, troubleshoot, and continue to build out our Python based data tooling, used to automate and ensure efficient and compliant state and federal submissions.
Research, design, and implement procedures to audit, certify, and publish student and staff information to CALPADS and other local, state and federal agencies.
For some of our more centralized data collection efforts, such as multilingual learner statuses and Free and Reduced Lunch Eligibility, partner with internal systems administrator to mass update KIPP’s student information system’s backend.
Solve sophisticated data problems in consultation with regional and school teams, as well as outside public agencies using both technical knowledge and knowledge of school data resources.
Data Quality Strategy & Systems (~25%) Rebuild and streamline data warehouse SQL models that support CALPADS.
This is alongside the team-wide ongoing data warehouse migration process to move our infrastructure and functionality to an updated and best in class solution with BigQuery and dbtCloud.
Lead our Data Quality Management Strategy, including helping us to determine when and how to centralize or decentralize collection and clean-up of key data for internal and external needs.
Maintain and refine over time, our suite of Data Quality Tools, used by our school and regional teams to identify critical data issues and drive timely corrective action in alignment with state and federal reporting submissions.
Leverage Python (pandas & selenium libraries) to automate data migration processes between multiple data systems and internal facing data quality tools.
Identify organizational needs pertaining to data quality and reporting, designing and building products to meet these needs for diverse audiences at both the school and at the regional level.
Data Analysis & Data Products (~15%) Provide analytical support in the form of analysis and data products to a portfolio of teams (Public Accountability & Compliance Team (PACT), Operations Team, and Growth Team to aid them in strategic decision-making.
Crosswalk large data sets to identify schools at risk for oversight.
Prepare data for the annual multi-lingual learner reclassification process.
Build & maintain data tools that allow school teams to identify their likely California Dashboard color (score) based on current and historical data.
Streamline and maintain the data analysis needs for our Local Control Accountability Planning (LCAP).
Preferred Qualifications Experience: Two (2) or more years of experience working an information management system and acting as a resource for problem identification and resolution.
Demonstrated project management experience that includes collaborating and problem solving across multiple teams, and creating resources, processes, playbooks and/or policies that interact with multiple stakeholders.
Knowledge/skills required: Ability to project manage to completion through collaboration across multiple teams and stakeholders, where no direct reporting relationship exists.
Proficient in using Python for automation (Pandas and Selenium libraries).
Some experience in either SQL or Tableau is a plus.
Proficient in Google Sheets, or Excel, including use of pivot tables.
Ability to think critically, manage multiple timelines, and complete detailed work with accuracy and accountability.
Highly resourceful, with ability to learn new data platforms/systems quickly and independently Ability to analyze issues, weigh risk, and recommend an appropriate course of action .
Proficient in Google suite (Google docs, Google drive, Google Slides, forms etc.
).
Education: Equivalent to graduation from high school and possession of the knowledge/skills listed above Physical, Mental and Environmental Physical: Ability to navigate office and school campuses, and hold meetings in different spaces.
Traditionally, much of the day involves sitting.
Ability to access and utilize technology.
Occasional lifting/carrying of equipment 1-20 lbs.
Physical agility to move self in various positions in order to execute duties effectively, which may include kneeling, walking, pushing/pulling, squatting, twisting, turning, bending, stooping and reaching overhead Mental: Stress of deadlines and normal work standards, ability to analyze problems and generate alternatives, work with interruptions, concentrate for long periods of time, read, calculate, perform routine math problems, memorize and recall objects and people.
Environmental: Office environment subject to constant interruptions and distractions.
Adhere to KIPP’s health and safety guidelines as outlined by the CDC, CDE, and public health agencies’ recommendations.
Classification This is a full-time, exempt position based on a full year calendar cycle and time off, located in our Regional Support Office with occasional travel to schools and districts.
The KIPP Regional Support Office is currently operating in a hybrid fashion.
Most positions can expect to work in person 2-3 days per week and remotely the remaining days, subject to change based on the needs of the role.

We benchmark annually against comparably-sized non-profit organizations in the regions where we operate, to offer competitive salaries.
The salary range for this position is between $83,000 and $103,000.
Most candidates would be compensated at $89,000.
