Bilingual Legal Assistant Wanted for Small Disability Justice Firm:

Our firm represents individuals with disabilities in Social Security matters.
We are looking for a legal assistant with a demonstrated commitment to civil rights to join our dedicated team.
The candidate must be competent to work independently and be reliable, flexible, and fearless.
You will be managing a range of day-to-day tasks and directly assisting in the legal representation of individuals with life-altering disabilities (both physical and mental) who have been denied essential government benefits.
This requires the ability and desire to be detail oriented, work well with a diverse client base, and be persuasive and tenacious.
You will be trained by and work alongside the current legal assistant.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1.
Associate or Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent experience) and at least one year of administrative assistance experience, or clinical or internship experience providing client advocacy
2.
Ability to work a full-time schedule during regular business hours (between 8am to 6pm, Monday through Friday)
3.
Excellent verbal and written fluency in both English and Spanish (oral and written test will be administered)
4.
Computer literacy, preferably Proficient with Adobe Acrobat, Google Workspace, Dropbox, and Microsoft Office.
Preference will be given to candidates with experience using Clio software and candidates highly comfortable using Adobe Acrobat.

Ability to effectively prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
6.
Experience practicing sensitivity to the needs of individuals from diverse backgrounds facing serious challenges
7.
Persuasive writing and oral skills
8.
Comfort communicating over the phone and familiarity with business phone etiquette

Excellent judgment and discretion

A desire to learn and grow while providing compassionate legal advocacy on behalf of individuals with disabilities
Preference given to candidates with experience in Social Security disability matters or 1 year or more as a legal assistant for a small firm.
PRIMARY JOB DUTIES:
This position will include:
● Consistently answering phones and taking messages in a professional manner● Corresponding with government agencies, clients, and medical facilities● Scheduling client meetings and deadlines● Preparing, filing, and following up on discovery requests● Processing incoming mail and responses to discovery requests● Managing other daily office tasks such as maintaining both electronic and paper files, shredding documents, ensuring adequate office supplies, and organizing● Interviewing clients, usually over the phone, to obtain information (this means being someone who is a good listener)● Timely drafting, filing, and organizing legal documents● Interpreting and translating for Spanish speaking clients
This job requires the ability to communicate clearly over the phone in both English and Spanish, work patiently and professionally with people from diverse backgrounds even under stress, and maintain attention to detailed tasks for up to two hours at a time.
COMPENSATION DETAILS:
LOCATION: Downtown Oakland.
We are located in a beautiful office suite across from Snow Park, near Lake Merritt.
Three blocks from the 19th St BART station.
