Hey everyone, sadly, I’m looking to re-home my beautiful 1 yr.
10mo old, intact male, great Pyrenees/ Anatolian shepherd named Zeus.
I was waiting to neuter him until he was 2, but he is so close and I’m willing to negotiate that with his potential new owner.
I think neutering would help with some of his behaviors (more below).
I rescued him in November 2022 from an abusive situation and brought him to my 4-acre property with horses, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, cats, and another small female dog.
He did well there with some exceptions (details to follow), and he is such a sweetheart and was an important part of my life and the farm.
Unfortunately, I’m getting a divorce and had to move from the farm and sell all my animals.
I didn’t want to give up Zeus because of our connection, but I’m now living in the city with my grandmother on a much smaller property, and it doesn’t feel fair for him to spend his life this way while I figure things out.
I’m not sure I’ll have land or be on a property that can sustain him anytime soon.
He is bonded to me, but I have no doubts that he’ll be able to bond with anyone else who shows him love and affection and spends the time with him.
He is more interested in being with people than animals, and is quite affectionate, clingy, floppy and goofy, and just wants to be by your side all the time.
However, he still has livestock guardian qualities.
Whenever I let him out of the house, he immediately does a perimeter check.
He chased off hawks and coyotes from the farm, and I never had any losses once I got him.
He loves kids, water (rain and snow, water buckets), does great with cats and female dogs and neutered males.
He has shown aggressive behavior toward other intact males (pinning them down to show dominance) but he doesn’t try to kill or seriously injure them.
He was bullied by goats when he was a pup, so he is timid around them but not aggressive at all, just doesn’t want to stay alone with them.
He wanted to chase my sheep, so I always kept them separate.
Doesn’t care about chickens, ducks or geese and I could have him with them unattended.
Probably the most difficult behavior is his desire to be on the other side of the fence.
When he was being abused, he learned how to dig and jump practically everything, so keeping him in was a challenge.
Once I put up hot wire, he respected it and stayed home.
When he did get out, he would check things out and then just sit in front of my house.
He never ran away for long periods of time; I think he just wanted a bigger boundary and to get into all the fun things around him.
Having solid fencing and either electric fence or collar fence system is a must for his new home.
We have been working on leash training, and he is good with basic commands like sit, down, stay, and heal on a leash.
His off-leash skills need work, like recall, however when he is home, and you call him he almost always comes.
I crate trained him, however if you leave him there alone for too long, he will try to escape.
I just want the perfect home for this lover boy, with someone who understands the challenges they will face with him and do everything they can to keep him happy and safe.
I will be vetting potential new owners and may ask for pictures or even a home visit.
I’m willing to give new owners a 30-day trial period to determine if he is the right fit for their lifestyles and property.
No rehoming fee, but I’ll want to come visit him occasionally! My preference will be someone living in Northern California or Southern Oregon.
Currently we are in Walnut Creek, but I am willing to travel to drop him off or meet up.
Please feel free to message me and I’d be happy to chat more about him.
Thank you for reading, let’s find Zeus his forever home and the family that he deserves!
