*Cafeteria Assistant*
*PRIMARY FUNCTION: *Under supervision, the Cafeteria Assistant I assists in the preparation, cooking, and serving of food, and performs cleaning tasks in a school cafeteria, serves foods in receiving cafeterias, and completes related work as required.
*ESSENTIAL DUTIES:*
Specific responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
* Assist in preparing all food items;
* Read and execute recipes up to and including:
* ○ Preparation: opening cans, washing fruits and vegetables, slicing and dicing meats, cheeses, fruits, and vegetables
* ○ Implementation: follow recipe instructions for assembly, cooking, and serving
* ○ Monitoring: take and record temperatures, check for acceptable ranges; notify leads if food temperatures are not within acceptable limits
* Set out and serve hot and cold food at all meal times;
* Perform cashier duties using the POS system, and according to established procedures; maintain cash accuracy;
* Restock supplies and food products, including filling a la carte shelves and replenishing utensils, condiments and disposable items;
* Prepare food for transportation to receiving schools;
* Assist in loading and unloading transport vehicle;
* Verify deliveries and sign invoices;
* Assist in cleaning kitchen and service areas;
* Wash pots, pans, knives, cutting boards, etc.

* Supervise student helper(s).
*KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:*
* Principles and methods of large scale food preparation, cooking, service, and storage;
* Care and use of standard commercial kitchen equipment;
* Sanitation and safety procedures related to commercial kitchens, particularly food preparation, serving and storage;
* Carry out assigned responsibilities independently;
* Keep simple records;
* Understand and carry out written and oral directions, policies, and procedures;
* Work under deadlines with interruptions;
* Establish and maintain courteous and cooperative working relations with students, staff, and the public; and
* Drive a motor vehicle.
*EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSES REQUIRED:*
* Equivalent to completion of eighth grade
* Some experience in the preparation and serving of food in a cafeteria or restaurant preferred
* Possess a valid California driver’s license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles
*WORKING CONDITIONS:*
* While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in an indoor kitchen environment with exposure to heat from ovens, hot foods and steamers and cleaning chemicals, fumes, equipment, and metal objects.
* Employees also work around knives, dicers, mixers, slicers and other sharp objects.
Work surfaces may be slippery.
* The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but may be loud depending on specific work site and/or equipment operation.
*PHYSICAL ABILITIES:*
* Pass a job-specific strength test that includes blood pressure check, a grip test, arm lift, torso pull & shoulder lift
* Stand for extended periods of time
* Frequently walk, stand or stoop, bend at the waist and reaching at or below the shoulders
* Continuously use hand strength to grasp objects and tools and operate nutrition service equipment
* Regularly lift and/or move items weighing up to 25 pounds
* Close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
* Hearing and speaking abilities to exchange information
