It remained in his family until 1899 when his granddaughter sold it to Abraham and Sarah Goodman from New York.

After surviving the Great Earthquake and Fire, the building was extensively repaired and modernized.
The building was completely renovated again between 1983-1985 preserving all the historical details, including the Victorian façade and birdcage elevator.
The renovation received a citation for architectural conservation from Foundation for San Francisco's Architectural Heritage .
Janis Joplin had lived in a small room on the second floor in the early sixties, as had Wes Wilson, who created the first Psychedelic posters for the Family Dog and Bill Graham.
